No pictures this time, just an update. Okay, I took the camera but completely forgot about it while I was exploring! We were out on Sunday again, this time to meet with an excavator guy for the road. Jed Rappel met us out there and he brought his wife and little boy (adorable!).
Troy and I had planned to use the existing clearing because we thought it would be easier and therefore cheaper. Turns out we'd both been a bit sad about that but didn't tell each other. I mean, really, we've got nearly 40 acres of trees and we'd be beside them when what we really love is to be in them. Not that there's anything wrong with the clearing at all, but it's quite steep in places and we'd need to bull-doze a lot of it. Neither of us was too keen to change the shape of the land.
Jed and Troy walked around the clearing; Troy showing Jed what we were thinking. I'm sure you'll all be shocked to learn that I hung back with his wife and chatted! Anyhow, Jed looked around and then told Troy what would be required to put in a road. He also pointed out some of the challenges we'd have with a steep road. Then he asked Troy how much land there was to work with and off they went, traipsing through the trees. What he came up with has us really excited.
Instead of bull-dozing (my phrase, so could be the wrong one!!) the clearing, Jed suggested we follow a natural berm that comes in off the TWP road. It follows through the trees and would lead back to the clearing. There's a natural clearing that would be our yard and there's room to put in the office trailer and our cabin - also the septic. It ends up being close enough to the clearing that we can put the electric cable in underground without degrading the something-or-other. This leaves the clearing open for Troy's quonset and equipment AND we'll have room for corrals/pens for the donkeys and goats.
By the way, we are apparently up to 2 donkeys and 2 goats. Troy doesn't want anyone being lonely...
Anyhow, we are thrilled with Jed's vision. We didn't think it would be affordable at this point but it is. Yeah!
We've got a bit of homework to find gravel and get the proper permits and such but we're on it so the road could be in within a few weeks. Then the office trailer gets dropped in and we can move to our new home!!! Not that it hasn't actually been great living at Mom and Kerry's house cuz it has, but it'll be nice to have our own home again. Ahhh...
